THE DIVINE BODY: PAINTINGS AND THE CULT OF BEAUTY AMONG THE NUBA OF SUDAN
18.04.2025Researchers from the Fondation culturelle Musée Barbier-Mueller will present a series of three conferences entitled “Treasures of the Sacred: Living Legacies of Forgotten Peoples” at Fondation Opale. These conferences will reveal the spiritual and artistic practices related to the sacred of three little-known peoples, highlighted by the work and research of the foundation.
For the final conference of this series, explorer and filmmaker Pierre Dubois will take us into the artistic world of the Nuba people of South Sudan, where body painting is a profound expression of spirituality and a quest for divine beauty. Using natural pigments, these artistic creations celebrate the relationship between humans, nature, and divinities.
His documentaries illustrate the importance of these traditions, combining scarification, seduction dances, and ritual gestures in a quest for transcendence. The Nuba, faithful to their roots, preserve this extraordinary heritage in the heart of the Djebels. Through his lens, Dubois brings together beauty, art and spirituality with a perspective marked by humanism and wonder.
